China's chlor-alkali industry began in the late 1920s. 1929, Mr. Wu Yunchu, a patriotic industrialist, established the Tianyuan Electrochemical Plant in Shanghai, which opened the prelude to the development of China's chlor-alkali industry. Until the establishment of New China, there were 10 chlor-alkali plants (points) in China.
After more than 90 years of development, China's chlor-alkali industry has continued to grow and develop. According to the China Chlor-alkali Industry Association, by the end of 2020, there were 158 caustic soda producers in China, with a total capacity of 44.7 million tons; there were 70 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) producers, with a total capacity of 26.64 million tons. Both of the industry's two main products account for 45% of the world's total production capacity
